Albertans are invited and encouraged to attend their local Sisters in Spirit Vigil across different communities in the province.
Created in 2007, the Stolen Sisters Awareness Walk was the first walk of it’s kind in the province of Alberta to specifically raise local, national and international awareness on the disproportionate number of missing or murdered, and exploited Métis, Inuit, Non-Status, and First Nations women and girls in Canada. Today, the SSBAM movement also inclusively advocates for missing or murdered, and exploited Indigenous men, boys, and gender diverse relatives.
October 4th is now a day when we honour the lives of missing and murdered Indigenous peoples, giving families time to heal and support those who have lost a loved one.
Stephanie Harpe is an International Grassroots Advocate for Indigenous peoples. She spoke to CJWE on what she hopes Indigenous peoples take away from these events and messages.
As human trafficking becomes one of the bigger issues in the country, Harpe says it’s important to bring awareness to the missing and murdered Indigenous people.
