New Orleans held a vigil Saturday evening on the streets where a man deliberately drove a pickup truck into a New Years celebration, killing 14 and injuring more.
A memorial was put up along Bourbon Street using makeshift crosses and pictures surrounded by candles, flowers and teddy bears. Victims’ loved ones held one another as they mourned, later snapping and swaying to music from a brass band.
“This is the most overwhelming response of love, an outpouring of love. I’m floating through it all,” Cathay Tenedorio, who lost her 25-year-old son Matthew, told AP News.
The attack occurred on Wednesday early-morning, when Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a former U.S. Army soldier, intentionally drove his car into revelers, according to officials. Investigators believe that Jabbar acted alone and claim he was seen on surveillance video placing two explosives at nearby intersections.
“He was 100 percent inspired by ISIS,” said Christopher Raia of the F.B.I.’s counterterrorism division.
According to Raia, Jabbar posted a video online claiming he joined the Islamic State terrorist group and originally planned to hurt loved ones, but was uneasy about how that would be seen by the news media.
As of now, officials do not believe this incident is related to the Las Vegas Tesla truck exploding outside of a Trump hotel on Wednesday, but are not ruling it out, according to the New York Times.
